Per data from Israel, a minimum of 98 detainees from Palestine have perished while detained beginning in October 2023. An advocacy organization operating from Israel has stated that the actual toll is almost certainly substantially higher, as a result of many of disappeared detainees originating in Gaza.

Only a single instance of assaulting prisoners has reached litigation, with the soldier sentenced to seven months. Prominent Examples

Some deaths in confinement have been publicly known, including a middle-aged hospital director who lost his life in prison after four months in confinement.

A prisoner incarcerated with the victim testified that he was brought to the yard by correctional officers immediately preceding his death, obviously hurt and naked from the lower body. His corpse remains unreleased to Gaza.

Additional detainees who perished in confinement by Israeli authorities are unidentified. The prison service and armed services gave researchers with the number of fatalities in custody, and limited additional information such as the site where they lost their lives, but excluding the inmates’ personal details.

Documentation Problems

Regarding 21 occurrences, mostly detainees from Gaza, researchers were not able to match the minimal data given by officials to a fatality recorded by advocacy bodies, by means of testimony from former inmates or coverage in the press.

The detainees’ families might not have learned about their relatives’ casualties as well, as Israel has made it difficult to monitor Palestinians it is confining.
