Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
