Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

Background on Conviction
