Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
